Turai Chanae Ki Dal Ka Salan

Turai or silk gourd or Ridge gourd or Beerakaya is subtler flavour vegetable. 'Turai Ka Salan' means 'Ridge gourd curry'. Ridge gourd's are good source of carbohydrates, vitamin A, vitamin C and minerals. These veggies have a rough, thick and greeny outer layer with smooth, soft and juicy inner layer. This is very simple and easy to make recipe. Perfect combo with hot roti's.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 kg Turai, peeled and cut into pieces
  • 1/2 cup Chana dal, washed and soaked for 2-3 hours
  • 1 Onion, finely chopped
  • 2 Green chillies
  • 1 tbsp Red Chilli powder
  • 1/4 tbsp Tumeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for cooking
  • 1-2 spring Coriander leaves

TEMPERING/SEASONING/TADKA/POPPU:

  • 1/2 tbsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tbsp Jeera
  • 6-9 Curry leaves
  • 1 dry Red Chilli

PREPERATION:

  • Pressure cook chana dal until soft but not mushy. Set aside.
  • In a heavy bottom cooking pan or kadai add oil. When oil gets heated up add all the ingredients listed under 'tempering'.
  • On a medium flame fry till curry leaves change color. Now add onions and saute for a while.
  • When the onions are translucent, add turai pieces, boiled chana dal, red chilli powder, tumeric powder, salt and green chillies.
  • Using a spoon slightly mix up the ingredients and cook on a low flame by covering with a lid.
  • Cook till all the water evaporates.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve with hot rotis or steamed hot rice.
  • Last but not least add your 'love' to make the dish 'YUMMY'.

Do you mean 1 tbsp Indian red chili powder(that we get in Indian grocery stores) or the Mexican Chili powder that is available in every grocery store...cuz 1 tbsp of this stuff wouldn't be too bad in that case, but if it is Indian red chili powder, isn't 1 tbsp way too much?
